Sound Unseen Duluth POSTER ART CONTEST!

09 Apr 2011 | Categories: News / Press | Posted by: Josh Leibold

*UPDATE: Congrats to our winner EMORY ALLEN for his winning design and thank you to all the talented artists that submitted to the festival!*

Attention LOCAL Artists/Poster Designers! Sound Unseen, your local film+music+art festival are holding a contest to find the next poster artist for our upcoming festival in Duluth, MN (June 8-12).

After attending Art Crank last weekend, we were inspired by all the many talented artists involved with that show and decided to reach out to our local artists and hold this contest.
Sound Unseen is an 11-year old festival here in Minneapolis, however last year we branched out to the beautiful resort town of Duluth as Sound Unseen Int’l Duluth (SUID). We are proud to be back there again in June and need a new, beautifully designed festival poster for it.
The winner will receive:
-$150.00?-GREAT EXPOSURE! Your design as our official 2011 Sound Unseen Duluth Int’l Festival Poster, which will also be the cover of our Festival Program and will be heavily featured in all print/media materials and websites (both Sound Unseen sites + sponsored/purchased advertising). This will reach 1000?s of people!?- (2) All-Access Festival Pass for SUID
CONTEST RULES:
– Submission DEADLINE: APRIL 15th, 2011?- All submissions must be new and original pieces of work by a MN-based artist?- Design must include the text: Sound Unseen International Duluth or Sound Unseen Duluth, the year (2011), our festival dates of June 8-12 and a tagline of “Details + Tickets: soundunseen.com”. Once winner is chosen, winner will have to eventually include our major sponsors at the bottom of the poster.
TIPS FROM THE SU TEAM: If you incorporate some element of Duluth into your design this is a big PLUS (ex. outline of well-known structures there like the lift-bridge, old water towers, lighthouses, etc.). We like bright, readable, attention grabbing, “poppy” designs. Last year’s festival poster is the event photo on this page by Kii Arens.
ALL SUBMISSIONS EMAILED IN PDF FORMAT TO:?vilay@soundunseen.com
We will announce the winner on MONDAY, APRIL 18th, 2011 on FACEBOOK. Winner will be emailed directly.

  • Sound Unseen created an Sound Unseen Presents: REVENGE OF THE MEKONS. ... See MoreSee Less

Sound Unseen presents the Minnesota premiere of director Joe Angio’s documentary, "Revenge of the Mekons," on of the longest running British rock bands, formed in the late 1970’s, The Mekons. We would like to thank to our sponsors, 89.3 the Current and Trylon microcinema for their contributions toward Sound Unseen. There will be a special intro by 89.3 the Current’s, Bill DeVille. “Revenge of the Mekons” chronicles the unlikely career of the genre-defying collective notorious for being—as rock critic Greil Marcus notes—“the band that took punk ideology most seriously.” Born out of the 1977 British punk scene, the Mekons progressed from a group of socialist art students with no musical skills to the prolific, raucous progeny of Hank Williams. Joe Angio’s exuberant documentary follows their improbable history – a surprising and influential embrace of folk and country music; forays into the art world (collaborations with Vito Acconci and Kathy Acker); and consistent bad luck with major record labels. Among the celebrated fans who appear on screen to testify to the power of their music and artistic innovations are authors Jonathan Franzen (The Corrections) and Luc Sante (Low Life), musician/actor Will Oldham, film director Mary Harron (I Shot Andy Warhol), comedian/ musician Fred Armisen (Portlandia), and critic Greil Marcus (Mystery Train). “Revenge of the Mekons” reveals how, four decades into an ever-evolving career, punk’s reigning contrarians continue to make bold, unpredictable music while staying true to the punk ethos.
